The area got its start in the 1890s after Kelly Hot Springs was discovered and used to provide water for Boise’s fire hydrants. These homes were some of the first in the nation to utilize a geothermal source for heat.

The Historic District, flanked by Jefferson Boulevard (later renamed McKinley) to the north and Warm Springs Avenue to the south, consists of 39 blocks of residential homesites. The area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
