“It sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays”

The headline to this article, a quote from the 1999 movie Office Space, always makes me laugh. Lately, it has also made me cringe.  As I spend more time training and mentoring Realtors, I am coming to realize both the pervasiveness and damage caused by self-defeating concepts such as “A Case of the Mondays”. Think about it. How often do you hear people lament and complain how difficult and stressful their Monday has been? How often do you yourself dread the coming dawn of Monday morning or write off a frustrating Monday as just another one of the same? Often these complaints come before the day is half over and sometimes before it has even begun! Without getting to far in the weeds about the psychological path we all take to dreading Monday; I would like to suggest a different perspective.

 

If you treat Monday as the most important day of the week, as opposed to something you should merely survive, you may start to notice a subtle but dramatic change in your productivity.  Monday can be the launchpad to productive week.  Envision yourself retiring on a Sunday evening filled with excitement that tomorrow is the day you will set the tone for the remainder of your week. How does that make you feel compared to a feeling of dread that overcomes so many of us?

 

I am going to let you in on a secret of productivity, Monday is the most critical day of the week. The most productive and profitable among us understand this secret. They do not write off an entire day of the week as, “A case of the Mondays” any more than they would write off an hour, minute, or even a second.  Successful people understand and respect the value of time. They use it as their most precious resource and protect it fiercely. They recognize that every day is an opportunity to get better. An opportunity to grow.

 

The first step sets the tone for a long journey.  It is part of human nature to follow the pace and rhythm set by your first steps in any endeavor. Your week is no different. It has been my observation that the way a Monday goes is often the way the remainder of my week will go. So, why should I set myself up for failure by going into the most important day of the week with a bad attitude? I want to set the bar high with an explosive and productive Monday. I want to accomplish so much on Monday that I could accomplish nothing the remainder of the week and still feel good about where I stood on Saturday.

 

Would you like to gain an edge over the competition? Then have a great attitude and a productive start to your week.  Review the week ahead on Sunday afternoon. Set out your clothes for the Monday morning to come. Get plenty of rest and good food in your body. Then, jump out of bed and attack the day with ferocity. Challenge yourself.  How much can you get done in one day? What would the week look like if you accomplished the most important 3 things on your weekly checklist before the end of the day on Monday? What would your life look like if every week followed the same pattern?

 

This article is about a mindset of progress and taking action to become the person you want and to accomplish the goals you set for yourself. You will never reach your full potential by handicapping yourself with limiting beliefs. There is no such thing as a “Case of the Mondays”. There are only people with productive attitudes and those with destructive attitudes. Time is to precious to waste any days.
